About this deal

com and The Christian Science Monitor praised the novel's way of subverting the young adult fiction genre's clichés. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Starting strong and never stopping, A TORCH AGAINST THE NIGHT thrills with high stakes, exciting action, vulnerable and raw characters, and a touch of magic and suspense. But there are several others who steal the thunder too: Afya Ara Nur, Mamie Ralie, and even the despicable Marcus Zarrar.

With AN EMBER IN THE ASHES, Sabaa Tahir shows us light in darkness, hope in a world of despair, and the human spirit reaching for greatness in difficult times. I really hope we get to see more of Laia and Elias, I feel so deeply connected to them at this point that I can't think of this as being the end of their story. As for the antagonists, the dreaded Commandant and the mysterious Nightbringer are hands down some of the best fictional villains I have read about. Still, i absolutely loved this story and that we saw more place outside of the empire as well as new people.

I'm reviewing An Ember in the Ashes and a Torch Against the Night together in this review, mostly because I didn't have the energy to rant twice. Granted, the protagonists did escape a rather messy situation last time round, but the chase dragged on for far longer than I wanted it to. What I Didn't Like:Although I did love the lore introduced in this book, I will admit that this fantasy element did at times seem a little forced.I hope there's more part of Keenan (get ready to be impressed with this character while reading this book) in the next books.

and there had better be a third book coming, because i want some vengeance - righteous, splattery vengeance. If you don't understand what the hell I'm talking about -because I'm a completely complicated person who can't explain herself- I'll explain now. This is also allowed a further understanding of her feelings towards Elias, which was much appreciated. This leads me on to her and Keenan's relationship (and his character as a whole) which I can barely tolerate. But somewhere, between hopelessness and frustration, there's a torch against the night, which may be the guide to light. However, I have read this book a thousand times before, and with every re-read, the story just gets better. If you’ve read any of my updates, you’d know how terrified I was going into this- that I was expecting the worst. He does get significantly more character development toward the end however I was less impressed and more relieved.

If you love compelling characters, horrendous villains, fascinating history and devastating fantasy worlds then this is absolutely the series for you though. Constant suggestions are made towards mass war and revolution, and the scale of this was really engaging. And I can guarantee that's what is probably going to happen in the third novel, because wheels have been finally been put into motion.

As I said before, the plot is very fast-paced, and with every new crisis, we see our characters being pushed to their limits, forced to make difficult choices that test their strength.
