About this deal

Arranging to mount it off the ground in other tents, especially those with flexible poles, can be more difficult. As it is a German-made vehicle, one of the plug sockets built into the campervan is a two-pin European socket which connects to the leisure battery.

The idea is simple - a hook up offers you access to electricity in your tent, motorhome, caravan or campervan with the help of a cable and a few sockets. PVC cables have a minimum installation temperature of 0 deg C and that s because they go hard and stiff making them difficult to pull into conduit etc. On a modern double-pole installation this is not a problem, however it is always worthwhile unplugging items that have exposed elements such as toasters and electric fires. The cables are usually brightly coloured for visibility, to stop them being trip hazards or accidentally damaged by campsite lawnmowers. One of the reasons for using a properly-designed electrical connection to your unit is that a Residual Current Device (RCD) safety device will be wired into the circuit. Heaters should be low powered and ideally designed for camp life, and don’t try to run your heater and kettle together – you could overload your pitch socket causing it to cut out and you may even cut out other sockets on the campsite. These adapters enable a campervan or motorhome user to connect their vehicle to a UK domestic 13A three-pin socket. The maximum cable length of 25 metres should ensure it can reach the supply bollard at most sites in the UK.

If you exceed the Amperage allowance for your pitch, you could trip the MCB switch and the power will go off. Club policy is that generators may only be used at the discretion of the Holiday Site Manager or the Steward on a meet or rally field. If you overload your supply, it may just be a case that your RCD or bollard circuit breaker tripped out. Electric hook ups are generally rated as 6A, 10A or 16A, which equates to how much power they are able to provide. What if I have a Crusader V762 Mains Supply Unit with 3 Sockets 15 meter Cable of 10 A but the camp is supplying 16A. During the day, we would boil the kettle or have George plugged in, have coolbox on and maybe have a mobile or I pad charging. Use electricity only when someone is present and unplug appliances and replace the covers over the socket outlets when you leave the tent. The parts of the campsite with powered pitches (electric hook up) will have power supply bollards dotted around the area for campers to plug into. The socket outlet of the Club’s site hook-up points complies with the British Standard BS EN 60309-2.

You should easily be able to read this on the breaker that to us, is the switch that is on the post your plug in to. The power supply is usually either 10 amp or 16 amp so you then need to do your own calculations then. However, it's important to understand that caravan and camping hook ups are designed for light power loads only. If you need to, always use weather-proof connectors and keep the connection off the ground – to avoid water getting inside.

Ideally your van should have a switched Residual Current Device (RCD) to protect you from a potential electric shock or fire by switching off the power in the event of a fault. The 10A or 16A rating is the cable and circuit breaker load capacity, it's not matched to the supply EHU in any other way.
